are not already covered with wind turbines and solar panels? We have the sun
and the wind, so what is the problem?
Setting aside for the moment the cost of
converting over from petroleum based electricity to renewable, the practical
challenge is that useful sunlight is available only six or seven hours a
day, and the wind is strongest when we need the power the least. As a result
the electricity from the sun and wind is intermittent and variable with the
time of day and the weather.
As a result, and absent a way to store the electricity created by solar and
wind systems for use when and as it is needed, local utilities are forced to
run fossil fuel generators constantly to assure a steady flow of well
regulated electricity to the public.
